UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving program hosted Lake Superior State Saturday morning. The Cardinals and Lakers competed in the pool for the second straight day after Friday evenings meet.
Both teams came out on top with the women winning 194-7 and the men winning 185-22. The top five scorers in the women's meet were all Cardinals with Samantha Fowler and Cailey Mills leading the way. Jenna Schmitt, Alexa Hieber, and Nina Pavlovic Cano followed behind. On the men's side, Matteo Capotosti and Hayden Gould tied with 18 points while Lyon Hall and Gryffin Porter tied with 13 along with Fedor Mironov of Lake Superior State.
Fowler had three first-place finishes winning the 100-yard and 1000-yard freestyle along with a win in the 400-yard free relay with Ella Yantz, Cassidy Lease, and Roni Markwood. Fowler had times of 55.24 and 10:48.70 in the 100-yard and 1000-yard freestyles as the team finished with a mark of 1:01.10 in the relay.
Schmitt took first in two events with a time of 1:12.20 in the 100-yard breaststroke and a time of 1:51.58 in the 200-yard medley relay with teammates Hannah Martin Cook, Emily Solarski, and Markwood. Hieber and Pavlovic Cano both had a first-place finish as well with Hieber winning the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.94 and Pavlovic Cano winning the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:16.73.
Capotosti and Gould both won two events with Capotosti taking first in the 500-yard freestyle and 1000-yard freestyle with marks of 4:48.38 and 9:53.11 respectively. Gould won the 100-yard backstroke with a mark of 53.10 seconds along with a first-place finish in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:59.75. Hall also had two golds with one in the 200-yard freestyle and the other in the 400-yard free relay. He finished the 200-yard free in a time of 1:40.46 while he and the team of Kyan Harnum, Trevor Schroeder, and Zack Dollman completed the 400-yard free relay in a time of 3:10.48
For the dives, Mills took first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives with scores of 407.63 over 11 dives and 222.68 over six dives. Porter took first in the 1-meter dives for the men with a score of 454.95 over 11 dives and took second in the 3-meter dives with a final score of 203.85 through six dives.
Up Next: Saginaw Valley swimming and diving have one more meet before the GLIAC Championships. The program hosts Davenport on Saturday, February 1 at 1:00 PM. The meet is set for a 1:00 PM EST start.
