Cardinals Sweep First Day of Back-to-Back Swim Meets Against Lake Superior State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving program hosted Lake Superior State University Friday evening for a dual meet. The Cardinals won both the men's and women's side against the first-year program Lakers with scores of 173-23 and 171-7.

Logan Fox and Rory Kauffman scored the most points with 18 each as Eric Slabbert followed up with 12 for the men. Cailey Mills led with 18 points with Samantha Fowler, Grace Charnstrom, and Alexa Hieber all scoring 13 for the women.

Fox took first in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard breaststroke with marks of 1:42.63 and 2:08.41. He also took second along with Isaac deVries, Reid Gilbert, and A'lmos Szedlak I the 400-yard medley relay as the team finished in a time of 3:30.81. Slabbert came home with a first and third place finish as he won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.18 and took third in the 200-yard breaststroke with a mark of 2:12.62.

Kauffman and Mills both took first in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives for SVSU. Kauffman scored 276.90 and 295.58 respectively while Mills led the women's dives with scores of 248.25 and 219.38 in the 1-meter and 3-meter.

Fowler placed in three events with a first and two seconds. She won the 400-yard individual medley with a mark of 4:34.42 while taking second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:19.79. Fowler's other second-place finish was in the 200-yard freestyle relay along with Ella Yantz, Graysen Koscielski, and Emily Solarski as the team finished with a time of 1:44.21. Hieber flipped with Fowler in both the 400-yard IM and the 500-yard freestyle, taking second in the relay with a time of 4:38.91 and first in the 500-yard free finishing in 5:19.78. Charnstrom also had a first and second place finish, winning the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.93 and taking second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a mark of 2:35.61.

Up Next: Saginaw Valley swimming and diving turns around quickly as they host Lake Superior State for another dual meet tomorrow (Saturday, January 25). The meet kicks off at 11:00 AM EST from the Gerstacker Regional Aquatic Center.
