Swimming & Diving Splits Against Wayne State to Open 2025

DETROIT, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving program opened up the 2025 calendar year at Wayne State Saturday afternoon. The No. 14 ranked men's program came away with a win against the No. 21 Warriors with a score of 129-114. The women fell to the No. 19 Warriors by a score of 141-97. The men's team came away with eight victories in their 13 events and the women won three of their 13.

SVSU men's team won two relays as Hadyn Gould, Eric Slabbert, Joao Pedro Nogueira, and A'lmos Szedlak won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:32.35 while Szedlak, Lyon Hall, Kyan Harnum, and Alvaro Rodriguez won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:08.24. On the women's side Samantha Fowler, Alexa Hieber, Ella DesJean, and Roni Markwood also won the 400-yard freestyle relay with mark of 3:42.11.

Logan Fox had a big day with three first-place finishes taking home the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.73 seconds, the 100-yard freestyle with a mark of 45.79 seconds and the 100-yard breaststroke with a finish of 56.22 seconds. Benjamin Wainman took home two golds with a top finish in both the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyles with times of 4:38.00 and 9:24.42 respectively. Rodriguez had the final top finish with a mark of 51.04 in the 100-yard butterfly.

The other two top finishes for the women were Grace Charnstrom with a time of 1:07.93 in the 100-yard backstroke and Hieber with a time of 5:12.45 in the 500-yard freestyle.

Up Next: Saginaw Valley swimming and diving gets back in action with a tri-meet on Saturday, January 11. The Cardinals face Ashland and Hillsdale at the Jack McAvoy Natatorium in Hilldale, Michigan. The meet is set to start at 1:00 PM.
