Both Swim & Dive Teams Take Second at Davenport Invitational

KENTWOOD, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving program competed in a three-day, seven-team invitational at Davenport University this weekend. The men and women both took second place behind Wayne State.

The men's program scored 991 points as Wayne State won with 997.5 points. Davenport followed with 808.5, Olivet Nazarene with 387, Aquinas with 329, Bethel University-Indiana 159, and Lake Superior State finished last with 49 points.

The women's program scored 702 points behind Wayne State with 1028. Hillsdale was third with 656, Davenport next with 587, followed by Olivet Nazarene with 365, then Aquinas with 252 and Bethel University-Indiana with 145.

Key performances came from Alvaro Rodriguez who broke the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:47.67 and Benjamin Wainman who rebroke his 500-yard freestyle and mile records with times of 4:28.28 and 15:16.66.

Along with the record breaking times, other first place finishes came from the men's relay team in the 200-yard freestyle relay as Logan Fox, A'lmos Szedlak, Adam Bebars, and Kyan Harnum had a time of 1:22.47. Another relay team of Hadyn Gould, Fox, Rodriguez, and Szedlak placed first with a time of 1:29.49 in the 200-yard medley relay. A third relay team of Szedlak, Lyon Hall, Isacc deVries, and Fox took first with a time of 6:36.74 in the 800-yard freestyle. A fourth relay first place finish came from Fox, Szedlak, Rodriguez, and Hall in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 2:59.32.

Fox had two other first place finishes. First, the 200-yard individual medley finishing in 1:48.83 and also the 100-yard butterfly in 48.06 seconds. Szedlak took first in the 100-yard freestyle as he finished in a time of 45.15.

For the women's team, a first-place finish came from Samantha Fowler took first in the 100-yard freestyle finishing with a time of 52.61, just 0.11 seconds ahead of second place.

Up Next: Saginaw Valley swimming and diving has the rest of the calendar year off and gets back in the pool on Saturday, January 4. The Cardinals head to Wayne State for a meet against the Warriors at the Matthaei Natatorium in Detroit, Michigan. The meet is set for 1:00 PM EST.
