MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving program had an early morning competing against Northern Michigan and Grand Valley Saturday at the PEIF Pool in Marquette, Michigan. The Cardinals had competed against Northern Michigan the evening prior at the same location. Both programs lost their meets as the women fell to Northern Michigan 232-68 and Grand Valley 232-68 while the men lost to the Wildcats 164-130.5 and the Lakers 203-96.
Benjamin Wainman and Alvaro Rodriguez had the only first place finishes for SVSU. Wainman took first in the 500-yard freestyle and the 1000-yard freestyle with times of 4:33.15 and 9:14.71. Both are NCAA DII B Cut times and the mark of 9:14.72 in the 1000-yard freestyle is the NMU pool record. Rodriguez took first in the 200-yard butterfly with a mark of 1:51.71 and also took second in the 100-yard butterfly finishing less than half a second behind the winner with a time of 49.31 seconds.
Lauren Cordier had the other second place finish as she had a B Cut time in the 500-yard freestyle finishing in 5:03.34.
Rory Kauffman and Gryffin Porter took third in dives as Kauffman scored 258.90 in the 3-meter dives for third place and Porter scored 430.55 in the 1-meter dives. Josh Rottier, A'lmos Szedlak, Logan Fox, and Alexa Hieber along with the men's relay team had the final third place finishes for the Cardinals. Rottier took third in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststrokes with times of 56.25 seconds and 2:08.27. Szedlak tied with Northern Michigan's Marty Wolmarans in the 50-yard freestyle with a mark of 21.02 seconds. Fox too third in the 100-yard butterfly as he finished in 49.88 seconds as well as being a part of the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay teams. The 200-yard medley team of Haydn Gould, Fox, Rodriguez, and Kyan Harnum finished with a time of 1:33.29 while 400-yard freestyle relay team of Fox, Szedlak, Lyon Hall, and Harnum finished with a time of 3:06.21. On the women's side, Hieber took third in the 1000-yard freestyle with a 10:36.20 finish.
Up Next: Saginaw Valley swim and dive heads to Davenport next month for a three-day event at the Kentwood Aquatic Center. The event takes place from Friday, November 22 to Sunday, November 24.
