MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving program travelled to the Upper Peninsula Friday evening to face Northern Michigan. The Cardinals split as the women lost 162-76 and the men defeated No. 10 NMU 143-98.
A'lmos Szedlak, Logan Fox, Alvaro Rodriguez, Rory Kauffman, and Josh Rottier all had first place finishes for the men as Emily Solarski had the lone gold for the women. Fox, Rodriguez, and Kauffman all took home two first-place finishes.
Fox won the 25-yard breaststroke with a time of 11.78 seconds and the 125-yard individual medley with a time of 1:05.37. The freshman Rodriguez won the 75-yard butterfly with a mark of 36.10 seconds and the 25-yard butterfly with a time of 10.17 seconds. Kauffman led in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives with scores of 293.10 and 273.60 respectively.
Szedlak took home the 175-yard freestyle as he finished with a time of 1:29.23 while Rottier finished the 75-yared breaststroke with a mark of 41.93 seconds for his winning event.
Solarski narrowly defeated Mia Stranzy in the 25-yard butterfly with a time of 12.35 seconds, beating the NMU swimmer by .05 seconds. She also helped the women's 125-yard freestyle relay team of her, Roni Markwood, Ella DesJean, Ella Yantz, and Nina Pavlovic Cano take second with a time of 35.17 seconds.
Entering the meet, the men's program was ranked No. 15 by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) and the women's program were receiving votes. The upset victory over Northern Michigan's men's program was a big one and head coach Jason Lintjer had this to say about the meet,
"This was a historic win for the program against a top 10 team. Really proud of how our guys fought until the end."
Up Next: Saginaw Valley swim and dive stays in Marquette as they hop back in the pool against Northern Michigan Saturday morning. They will be joined by Grand Valley State University in a tri-meet starting at 11:00 AM EST from the PEIF Pool.
