Wainman Named All-American on Final Day of National Championships

GENEVA, Ohio – The Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving program wrapped up their season with the final of five days at the NCAA Division II National Championships at SPIRE Institute on Saturday. The Cardinals got their first All-American of the meet in the 1650-yard freestyle.

Benjamin Wainman placed eighth in the 1650-yard freestyle with a program record time of 15:23.32, beating his previous record time by more than two seconds. It is the second record time for Wainman during the national meet after his time of 4:28.84 on the 500-yard freestyle on Friday.

Alexa Hieber also swam in the 1650-yard freestyle. She took 20th out of 31 with a time of 17:13.24. Alejandro Robles Ruiz wrapped up his weekend of seven events with the 100-yard freestyle. He took 22nd out of 44 with a time of 43.90.

SVSU swim & dive sent 11 student-athletes to the National Championships, the most in program history. With the five days of competition over, the 2023-24 swimming and diving season comes to a close. The team posted many record times over the season. The men set 16 of the 23 records and the women set three of their 23 to rewrite the record book.
