Cardinals Compete at First Day of NCAA DII Swimming & Diving Championships

GENEVA, Ohio – Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving set a program record by sending 11 athletes to the NCAA Division II National Championships this year. The meet kicked off at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio on Tuesday.

All four divers competed in the qualifying meet to officially make it into the national meet. Rory Kauffman, Sam Hudgens, Kaylee Smith, and Cailey Mills all took part in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives with Kauffman hitting the mark to move on. Kauffman placed 12th and 13th in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives scoring 247.55 and 243.85 respectively. Hudgens placed 24th and 30th in the dives with Smith placing 31st and 27th and Mills taking 47th and 35th.

There were only two swimming events on Tuesday as the men and women swam the 800-yard freestyle relay. The team of Logan Fox, Almos Szedlak, Isaac deVries, and Alejandro Robles Ruiz placed 13th out of 16 teams finishing the event in 6:34.93.

Day two brings more action for SVSU swim and dive with Robles Ruiz, Eric Slabbert, Fox, and Szedlak competing in the 200-yard medley relay along with Benjamin Wainman and Alexa Hieber swimming in the 1000-yard freestyle.
