SVSU Swim & Dive Sends Record Number of Athletes to NCAA DII Championships

INDIANAPOLIS - Saginaw Valley State University swimming and diving had a program high 11 student-athletes selected on Wednesday to compete at the NCAA Division II National Championships. The meet is being held from Tuesday, March 12 through Saturday, March 16 at the SPIRE Institute Aquatics Center in Geneva, Ohio. 

Isaac deVries, Logan Fox, Sam Hudgens, Rory Kauffman, Alejandro Robles Ruiz, Eric Slabbert, Almos Szedlak, and Benjamin Wainman will represent the men's program in 14 events. Alexa Hieber, Cailey Mills, and Kaylee Smith will represent the women's program in five events. 

It will be the first time for all four divers as Hudgens, Kauffman, Mills, and Smith will all compete in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. 

Hieber lands a spot at the NCAA DII Championships as a freshman. She will compete in the 500-yard, 1000-yard, and 1650-yard freestyle. She is ranked 41st in the 500-yard, 26th in the 1000-yard, and 27th in the 1650-yard. Hieber posted a great first year at SVSU setting the 1000-yard and 1650-yard records with times of 10:14.03 and 17:11.32. 

Wainman makes his first DII Championship appearance competing in the 500-yard, 1000-yard, and 1650-yard freestyle. He ranks 38th in the 500-yard, 11th in the 1000-yard, and 9th in the 1650-yard events. Wainman continued to smash the Cardinal record board putting up times of 9:12.34, and 15:25.49 in the 1000-yard and 1650-yard events. 

Robles Ruiz and Fox return for their second DII Championship appearances. They both will compete in three individual events along with four relays. Robles Ruiz will swim the 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke, and 100-yard freestyle while Fox swims in the 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard breaststroke, and the 200-yard individual medley. Robles Ruiz ranks 10th in the 100-yard butterfly, 14th in the 100-yard backstroke, and 9th in the 100-yard freestyle. Fox ranks 21st in the 100-yard butterfly, 6th in the 100-yard breaststroke, and 7th in the 200-yard individual medley. Robles Ruiz set record times at SVSU in all three events with Fox also breaking the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley. 

Szedlak and Slabbert return as well for their second DII Championships. The two team up with Robles Ruiz and Fox in the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relay along with the 200-yard medley relay. Devries makes his National Meet debut as a freshman as he teams up with Robles Ruiz, Fox, and Szedlak in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The teams have set records in the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relay along with the 200-yard medley relay this season. They rank 12th in the 200-yard, 10th in the 400-yard, and 10th in the 800-yard free relays and 14th in the 200-yard medley relay.
