UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University swimming & diving teams hosted Northern Michigan University in a dual meet Saturday at the Gerstacker Regional Aquatic Center. NMU earned the victory in both the men's and women's competitions. The Wildcats defeated the SVSU men 137-104, while the Cardinal women fell in a close meet 127-116.

Women's Highlights:

• Tonya Guryeva won the 100-yard freestyle event with a time of 51.96. She currently ranks first in the GLIAC and ninth in NCAA DII. She also won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:54.65.
• Libby Caird won the diving events. The senior took the 1-meter event with a score of 244.80, and the 3-meter event with a score of 249.60.
• Flora Mia Szklenar won the 1650-yard freestyle event with a time of 17:52.14.
• Szklenar, Guryeva, Zoe Vance, and Sydney Shipps won the women's 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:37.02.

Men's Highlights: 

• Alejandro Robles Ruiz set a school record in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:41.00, finishing second in the race. He won the 100-yard butterfly event with a time of 50.03.
• Matteo Capotosti set a school record in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:02.82. That time is currently is ranked second in the GLIAC and seventh in NCAA DII.
• The team of Ruiz, Sanders Modglin, Eric Slabbert, and Kyle Amick set a school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:22.73. That relay is also ranked first in the GLIAC and seventh in NCAA DII.

"I'm so proud of how this team competed today. Truly an amazing meet. The NMU women are two years removed from winning a GLIAC championship and we hung with them until the very end. We didn't end up winning the meet, but we fought for every single point. Overall we showed huge improvement."

SVSU will prepare for the Davenport Invitational starting Friday, Nov. 19 in Caledonia, Mich.
