Softball Splits at Ferris to Start GLIAC Play

BIG RAPIDS, MICH. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team split at Ferris State to open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Monday afternoon. The Cardinals took game one 6-3 before falling 1-0 to the Bulldogs in a low-scoring game two to end the afternoon.

GAME 1 – SVSU 6 – FERRIS STATE 3

Emily Depew (W, 7-4) earned her seventh win of the season as she went the distance in game one after striking out six Bulldogs while allowing just two earned runs in the winning effort.

Emma Helvie put the Cardinals on the board with a single to center field that brought Maddie Campagna home for the 1-0 lead in the top half of the second inning.

An RBI single to right field in the bottom of the third tied the score.

The fourth inning was where SVSU pulled away, starting with a home run to right field by Paige Kolinski, her third of the year, for the 2-1 lead. Sydney Herioux doubled to left center to bring Marissa Beck home to double the lead. Mya Purdy then singled through the left side to score both Evelyn Rybicki and Helvie to bring the score to 5-1.

A second run was scored by FSU in the bottom half of the fifth with a single to left center to put the score at 5-2.

Campagna added the final run for the Cardinals in the fifth inning with an infield single to score Aalana Kimble.

The Bulldogs got one run in the bottom of the seventh, but SVSU held tight to record the final two outs to secure the win.

Campagna led offensively with three hits in her four appearances. She scored one run and brought home one runner. Herioux also went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Purdy (2-for-3), Reifschneider (2-for-3), and Helvie (2-for-4) were the three Cardinals with two hits in game one. Purdy registered a team-high two RBI.

GAME 2 – FERRIS STATE 1 – SVSU 0

Alyssa Muench (L, 3-5) got the start in the circle for SVSU in game two. She completed the game and recorded two strikeouts while only giving up three hits and one run in six innings of work.

A home run to right center by Ferris State in the bottom of the fourth inning was the difference in a tight ball game to end the doubleheader day in a split.

Ella Reifschneider, Muench, and Campagna recorded hits for the Cardinals in game two.
