Softball Falls in Final Games of Spring Break Trip

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team fell to Barry 4-2 in the first game of the day before finishing the day against Nova Southern, which ended with the same result (4-2 loss) to finish the Spring Break trip in Florida.

GAME 1 Barry 4 – SVSU 2

Four Cardinals recorded hits in the game against Barry to begin the day. Paige Kolinski led offensively with two RBI in the fourth inning that proved to be the only runs for SVSU.

Emily Depew (L, 4-3) got the start in the circle and surrendered six hits and three earned runs while striking out eight Buccaneer batters.

Barry took an early 1-0 lead after a run crossed the plate in the top of the first inning. Kolinski gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when she hit a two-run home run to left field to score Emily Beckas.

Three more runs would score in the bottom half of the fourth inning as the Bucs took the lead and held onto it through the remaining three innings of play.

Alyssa Muench, Mya Purdy, Sydney Herioux, and Kolinski each recorded a hit for SVSU in the contest.

GAME 2 – Nova Southern 4 – SVSU 2

Muench pitched her second complete game of the season. She sat down nine NSU batters and allowed eight hits and four runs in the losing effort.

The Sharks built a 4-0 lead through the first five innings of the game. The first came in the bottom half of the second with a single to right field. The next runs were the result of a double in the third inning that scored two runners. The last run for Nova Southern was a double in the fifth.

Marissa Beck scored on a groundout by Aalana Kimble in the top of the seventh. Muench then singled to left field and allowed Emily Beckas to cross the plate, but the Cardinals couldn't complete the rally.

Ella Reifschneider and Muench led Saginaw Valley in game two with two hits. Muench and Kimble tallied an RBI for the Cardinals.

UP NEXT

SVSU softball wraps up the Spring Break trip and will return home before heading to Ohio next week for three road doubleheaders beginning with Findlay on Saturday, March 16 at 2:00 p.m.
