Softball Drops Two on First Day of Spring Break Trip

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team dropped both games in the team's first day of the Spring Break trip to Florida. The Cardinals (4-4) lost game one 15-3  to Assumption before ending the day with a 5-0 defeat against Embry-Riddle.

GAME 1 – Assumption 15 – SVSU 3

Emily Depew (L, 1-2) got the start in the circle for SVSU against Assumption. She pitched four scoreless innings before being relieved in the fifth after surrendering five hits, five runs, one earned run, and four strikeouts.

The top of the fifth inning saw the Greyhounds take advantage of Cardinal errors and put five runs on the board.

Assumption would increase the lead by two more in the top of the sixth before Sara Moos hit a double to center to score Evelynn Rybicki and Faith Maloney to cut the deficit to 7-2.

Moos would score two plays later on a passed ball to bring the Cardinals within four runs with one final inning left to complete the rally.

A tough top half of the seventh inning gave the Greyhounds six more runs and put the score where it would remain for the final.

Moos led the way offensively with two hits, a run, and two RBI. She accounted for half of Saginaw Valley's hits in the game.

GAME 2 – Embry-Riddle 5 – SVSU 0

Alyssa Muench got the start for SVSU in game two. Muench finished her five-inning appearance with four strikeouts and two earned runs while giving up seven hits. Aalana Kimble relieved her for the final inning of play.

The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third before adding an insurance run in the fifth and sixth frame to earn the win.

Maddie Campagna had a good showing for SVSU going a perfect 3-3 at the plate. The reigning GLIAC softball player of the game added a stolen base to her stat line as well.

UP NEXT

The Cardinals move onto the USSSA Space Coast Complex in Melbourne, Florida tomorrow for games against Walsh and Wilmington. The first game is set for 6:00 p.m., with the nightcap happening at 8:00 p.m.
