Softball Falls to Grand Valley State in Shortened Afternoon

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team fell 7-0 to seventh-ranked Grand Valley State in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader that was called before game two could be played on Wednesday afternoon. The Cardinals (28-11, 12-5 GLIAC) drop a game but remains in the second spot in the league standings.

Alexis Gills continued her hot streak with a hit in each of her three at-bats on the day. Gills extends her hit streak to four-straight games and she has had multiple hits in three of the last four games. Jackie Popko was 1-4 and Katelyn Pnacek was 1-3 as they recorded a hit for SVSU.

The Lakers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after two RBI singles brought runners home. The Cardinals left a runner on base in the first three innings of play. Two more baserunners were stranded in the fourth as the Lakers' defense held SVSU scoreless while adding an additional point in the bottom half of the frame.

Three more runs crossed the plate in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 6-0. A sixth runner was left on base in the sixth with another stranded in the seventh as GVSU added one more point in the final two innings for the final score.

Alyssa Muench (L, 8-3) got the start for the Cardinals. She pitched 4.1 innings before Jaclyn Groves took over for the final 1.2 innings of play.

The SVSU softball team will return to University Center, Michigan for a GLIAC doubleheader against Wayne State on Friday, April 21. Game one will begin at 3:00 p.m. inside the SVSU softball complex.
