Cardinals End Dome Games with 2-0 Final Day

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team finished the Lewis Dome Games with a 2-0 showing on the final day after wins over Minnesota-Duluth and Walsh. The Cardinals recorded a 2-1 win over Duluth before capping the day with a late win over Walsh, 13-4.

Game 1: Saginaw Valley State def. Minnesota-Duluth, 2-1

The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd-inning after scoring on a bases-loaded walk and then a groundout that scored Alexis Gills.

A home run to center field cut the SVSU lead in half in the top of the 3rd-inning. The Cardinals spent the rest of the game on defense as they held on to preserve the lead and secure the win.

Sara Moos and Paige Kolinski had the two hits for SVSU in the winning effort. Alyssa Muench (W, 3-0) pitched all seven innings and recorded eight strikeouts to earn the win.

Game 2: Saginaw Valley State def. Walsh, 13-4 (6-Innings)

Sarah Gersch hit an RBI-double to score Jackie Popko in the first to give the Cardinals a quick 1-0 lead. Gersch added to the scoreboard after she scored on a wild pitch. An RBI-single for Walsh put the score at 2-1 in the bottom of the third.

A two-run home run gave the Cavaliers the lead in the bottom of the 2nd-inning.

Leah Denome busted a triple in the top of the 4th-inning that scored Maddie Campagna and Sydney Herioux to take the lead of 4-3. Gersch added to the scoring with a triple to center field that scored Popko.

Walsh cut the lead to one with a home run to left field in the bottom of the 4th-inning.

Gersch added another run with an RBI-double that scored Popko and pushed the edge to 6-4 in the top of the 6th-inning. A passed ball later in the inning scored Gersch to extend the lead to 7-4. Alexis Gills then hit a double to left field that scored Emily Beckas and Ella Schneider and Katelyn Pnacek followed up with a double that scored Gills to put the lead to 10-4. Popko added another with a sacrifice fly that scored Pnacek. The inning continued with a run off an RBI-single from Gersch that scored Cam Coonan and Marissa Beck to put the lead at 13-4 to seal the win.

UP NEXT

The SVSU softball team will travel to Florida for a series of Spring Break games in Clermont that go from Sunday, March 5 through Saturday, March 11. The first games are against Lake Erie and St. Cloud State.
