Depew Shuts Down USI to lift SVSU to Regional-Opening Win

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team opened the 2022 NCAA DII Midwest Regional, stifling the No. 1 seed and host, the University of Southern Indiana, to earn the win on Thursday in Evansville, Ind.

The Cardinals were bolstered by the strong pitching of junior Emily Depew, shutting out the Screaming Eagles for a 1-0 win. SVSU moves to 35-18 on the season and advances into the winner's bracket of the Midwest Regional pod.

Game Breakdown:

  • Depew retired the first USI batters in order before the Screaming Eagles found back-to-back singles in the third. Depew forced a pop p to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.
  • Sara Moos took advantage of a USI error to reach first leading off the fourth. Marissa Beck came in to pinch run and was advanced to second on a bunt from Blasia Moyler.
  • USI was able to keep Beck at second with two outs in the fourth, but Sydney Herioux came through with the lone RBI, sending a single to right to score Beck.
  • Depew continued her dominance and held the Screaming Eagles to one hit the rest of the way. Depew (15-9) pitched all seven innings, allowing three hits, walking one, and striking out five.

The No. 8 seed Cardinals move on to face the No. 5 seed Drury University at 1 pm EST on Friday in Evansville. Drury outlasted No. 4 seed Lindenwood University 1-0 in 14 innings to open play on Thursday.

USI and Lindenwood will square off in an elimination game at 3:30 pm EST on Thursday.
