SVSU runs away with game two for split at Tiffin

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team settled for its second doubleheader split in two days after taking one at Tiffin University on Thursday in Tiffin, Ohio.

The Cardinals dropped a marathon opening game 3-2 in 12 innings but rebounded to run away with game two 13-2. The split moves SVSU to 11-7 overall this season.

Game One Breakdown:

  • The Cardinals left runners on base in eight of the first 10 innings as the game remained scoreless until the 11th.
  • Julia Mundy kept the Dragons off the board through 10 innings as well on the mound for the Cardinals.
  • SVSU broke through with an RBI single in the top of the 11th from Meagan VerVaecke. Cam Coonan made it 2-0 with an RBI single later in the inning.
  • Tiffin evened the game in the bottom of the 11th with a pair of RBI singles.
  • After SVSU failed to score in the 12th, Tiffin got a leadoff double in the bottom of the inning and the run came around to score to give the Dragons the win.
  • Mundy (2-1) pitched 11.2 innings, allowing three runs on 11 hits, walking one, and striking out nine.
  • Cam Coonan led the SVSU offense with four hits and one RBI.

Game Two Breakdown:

  • Coonan got the Cardinals on the board early in game two with an RBI single in the first.
  • Julia Salisbury drove two more home with a single in the third, followed by a two-run single from Paige Kolinski to make it 5-0.
  • The Cardinals added one in the fourth on a passed ball before the Dragons scored their lone two runs of the game on a home run in the bottom of the innings.
  • The Cardinals put the game away with seven runs in the fifth, including a two-run single from Sarah Gersch.
  • Emily Depew (4-4) earned the win on the mound, allowing two runs on three hits, striking out nine.
  • Kolinski went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and four RBIs.
  • Coonan, Salisbury, and Gersch each finished with two hits.
