ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Saginaw Valley State University softball team concluded play at The Dome on Saturday in Rosemont, Ill.
SVSU won both of its games, defeating McKendree 9-1 in six innings and posting a 3-0 shutout win over William Jewell. With the wins, the Cardinals are now 4-2 overall.
Game One Breakdown:
- The Cardinals got on the board right away in the top of the first inning when Sara Moos hit a sacrifice fly to center field and brought home Julia Salisbury. The Bearcats answered in the bottom of the first with a solo home run.
- SVSU posted three runs in the top of the second inning, including a two-run double by Leah Denome that scored Blasia Moyler and Meagan VerVaecke.
- The lead for the Cardinals continued to grow. Marissa Beck scored on a wild pitch in the top of the third to make it 5-1 SVSU.
- Moos drove in her second run of the game in the top of the fourth to make it 6-1.
- In the top of the fifth, Denome drove in her third run with an RBI single that scored Moyler.
- VerVaecke capped the scoring for SVSU with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth.
- Emily Depew got the start in the pitching circle for the Cardinals and earned the win, going 4.1 innings and allowing one run, two hits, three walks, and striking out nine. Alyssa Muench came in relief for Depew and finished off the Bearcats.
Game Two Breakdown:
- SVSU again scored in the first inning, when Alyssa Muench sent a ball over the wall for a two-run home run.
- The score remained 2-0 Cardinals until the bottom of the fifth when Muench singled and brought home, Cam Coonan.
- William Jewell was unable to find the scoreboard and SVSU took the victory
- Jaclyn Groves got the start on the mound and pitched a complete game shutout, only allowing three hits while striking out 10 batters.

The Cardinals will travel to Florida for THE Spring Games beginning next Saturday. SVSU will face the University of Central Missouri at 9 am Saturday and Seton Hill University at 11:15 am from Winter Haven, Fla.
