Cardinal Men Host the SVSU Classic

UNIVERSITY CENTER - The Saginaw Valley State University men's track & field team hosted the SVSU Classic on Friday (Jan. 16) night in the SVSU Fieldhouse.  The Cardinal men had some solid showings in the event.

In the 60 meter dash, sophomore Malik Washington claimed first place after a time of 7.12 in the finals after posting the best mark of 7.17 in the prelims.

Junior Josh Simmons added a top finish in the 400 meter dash, crossing the line first with a time of 49.61.

Sophomore Joey Southgate placed first in the 3,000 meter run, finishing with a time of 8:50.25.  Southgate also finished second in the one mile run with 4:15.08 finish.  Junior teammate David Jensen was third in the mile run with a mark of 4:30.51.

In the 800 meter run, SVSU had senior Travis Toye finish second with a time of 1:58.73 and junior Gerald Henderson next with a 1:59.03 finish in third.

Junior sprinter D'Omar Boyden claimed the top spot in the 60 meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 8.72.

Senior Frank Sanders placed first in the high jump with a height of 2.09 meters while sophomore Robert Tarpley posted top finishes in the long jump (6.74m) and the triple jump (14.26m).

Sophomore Devin Hartnagle had a pair of second place finishes in the shot put with a mark of 14.14 meters and the weight throw with a distance of 15.56 meters.

Saginaw Valley returns to the oval Friday (Jan. 23), back at the SVSU Fieldhouse for the Doug Hansen Open.  Field events are set to begin at 2:30 pm in the event.
