GENEVA, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track & field teams began competition on Wednesday (Apr. 30) at the 2014 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
In the opening day of competition, the first parts of the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon were held.
Men
Tyler Grob leads the way in the decathlon halfway through the competition. Grob finished the day with a total of 3,566 points, which has him seven points clear of Ashland's Tyler Chancellor, who has 3,559 points. He looks to defend last year's title in the event when he broke the GLIAC and SVSU record with a mark of 7,024 points.
Grob finished first in the decathlon high jump, clearing the bar at a height of 6'2.75". He added a runner-up finish in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.82, finishing a hair behind teammate Andrew Mudd, who won the race with a 10.81 mark.
Mudd added another top finish in the 400 meter dash, finishing with a time of 50.12. He sits in fourth place overall in the decathlon with a total of 3,365 points.
The event gets back under way on Thursday at 9:00 am and finishes with its last portion at 3:10 pm.
Women
Sidney Bischer is Saginaw Valley's lone participant in the heptathlon for the championships. Bischer currently sits in fourth place in the event with a first day total of 2,428 points.
Through four events, Bischer had a pair of fourth place finishes. She leapt to a height of 5'1.75" in the high jump and tallied a toss of 30' flat in the shot put.
The heptathlon will have its final three portions begin Thursday at 9:30 am and will commence at noon with the final event.
All other events will begin on Thursday as well with select field events and race preliminaries.
