Seven Cardinals Headed to Track & Field Indoor Nationals

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Seven members of the Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track and field teams will head to Birmingham, Ala. to compete in the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships to be held March 7-9. 

On the men's side, Tyler Grob (Pinckney, Mich.) will lead the way for Saginaw Valley. He will compete in both the heptathlon and pole vault competitions where he is ranked 10th and 12th, respectively. Grob was named the 2013 GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships 'Field Athlete of the Meet' last weekend.

Frank Sanders (Detroit, Mich. / Sterling Heights) is the other male joining Grob as he travels to Alabama ranked 12th in the high jump competition with a mark of 2.09 meters.

The Lady Cardinals will send their distance medley relay (DMR) team consisting of Emily Short (Tawas, Mich. / Tawas Area), Shavonne Roberson (Ypsilanti, Mich.), Taylor Stepanski (Alpena, Mich.) and Lauren Hill (Flat Rock, Mich.) to NCAAs with the 13th best time in the country, 11:51.96. 

Stepanski and Short will also compete in individuals races in Birmingham. Stepanski comes in ranked sixth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:11.05, while Short is ranked ninth in the 3,000 meter distance race with an SVSU record time of 9:42.12.

Sophomore Emerald Joiner (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill) is the lone field qualifier on the women's side for SVSU. Joiner will compete in the shot put competition where she is ranked 16th in DII with a distance of 14.24 meters.

The top eight finishers in each event at the NCAA Championships will earn All-America honors.
