David Ray Breaks Own 60 Hurdles School Record at CMU Jack Scoog Open

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track and field teams competed in the Jack Skoog Open hosted by Central Michigan University on Friday (Feb. 15) evening. Joining the Cardinals were host Central Michigan, Alma and Northwood as well as unattached athletes.

Mens

The Saginaw Valley State University men's track and field team was led by senior David Ray (Lansing, Mich. / Eastern) who broke his own school record of 8.09 (GVSU Early Bird - Nov. 30, 2012) in the 60 meter hurdles as he sprinted across the finish line in 8.08 seconds to finish in second place. Ray's 8.08 mark is also an NCAA Division II Provisional Qualifying time and currently ranks 18th in the nation.

On Saturday (Feb. 18), Ray was the lone Cardinal to compete in the Silverston Invitational at the University of Michigan. Ray grabbed first place honors with a time of 8.22.

Drew Meylan (Bay City, Mich. / Western) paced the field in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:58.51 to earn the first place honors. Justin Walker (Clio, Mich. / Birch Run) would also run to a first place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.33.  

D'Omar Boyden (Portmore, Jamaica) earned a third place finish with a time of 8.33.  Gareth Gose (Leslie, Mich.) crossed the line in fourth place with a time of 9:07.57 in the 3000 meter run, while Jacob Lauka (Oxford, Mich. / Lake Orion) earned sixth place honors with a time of 9:28.68 and Tony Peel (Swartz Creek, Mich. ) finished in ninth with a time of 9:45.24.  

Junior Raetron Bryant (Burton, Mich. / Atherton HS) jumped to a second place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 13.65 meters.

Senior Tyler Grob (Pinckney, Mich.) had a strong showing on the afternoon as he finished tied for third in the high jump with a leap of 1.85 meters and fifth in the long jump with a distance of 6.31 meters.  Jarius Woolfork (Westland, Mich.) would go on to earn a second place finish in the shot put with a throw of 13.53 meters and a fifth place finish in the weight throw with a toss of 14.50 meters.

Women

Several members of the Saginaw Valley State University women's track and field team had good showings on the evening as Jessica Reeves (Sanford, Mich. / Meridian) earned top honors in the 3000 meter run with a time of 10:51.39, while Teha Ames (Shepherd, Mich.) finished right behind her in second place with a time of 11:01.66.  Fellow Cardinal Sidney Bischer (Avoca, Mich. / Yale) would earn a sixth place finish in the 60 meter hurdles, as she crossed the line with a time of 10.18.

This is the final tuneup for the Cardinals as they prepare for the 2013 GLIAC Indoor Championships at Grand Valley State University next weekend (Feb. 23-24).
