Toye Victorious in 800 Meter Run; Cardinals Run Well in Dual with GVSU

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track and field teams hosted Grand Valley State University in a scored dual meet between the two rival institutions. The Lady Cardinals set three school records, including two SVSU-GVSU Dual meet marks in the final home meet of the season.

Men - No. 7 Grand Valley 95, Saginaw Valley 43

On the men's side, sophomore Travis Toye (Davison, Mich.) was the lone top finisher for the Cardinals as he took first place in the 800 meter run. Toye finished the race with a mark of 1:56.37.

Runner-up finishers for the SVSU men included Joseph Burelle (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson HS) who clocked in at 4:23.43 in the men's mile run, while Frank Sanders (Detroit, Mich. / Sterling Heights HS) took second place in the high jump as he cleared 6-feet-7 inches.

Women - No. 1 Grand Valley 85, Saginaw Valley 50

Freshman Yanisha Edwards (Flint, Mich. / Northwestern HS) set the tone for the women by setting two more SVSU school records. Edwards broke her own school record in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.83 seconds in the prelims before finishing in third place at 7.85 in the final heat.

Later on in the meet, Edwards finished runner-up in the 200 meter dash as she crossed the finish line in 25.24 to set yet another school record for the Cardinals.

Saginaw native Emerald Joiner (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill HS) posted a new SVSU school record and NCAA Division II Provisional Qualifying mark of 46-feet-8.75 inches in the shot put competition as she took top honors.

Freshman Taylor Stepanski (Alpena, Mich.) was victorious in the 800 meter run, crossing the line in 2:13.13 to set a new meet mark, while senior Lauren Hill (Flat Rock, Mich.) finished first in the mile run with a mark of 5:03.71 to earn a provisional qualifying mark.

Teha Ames (Shepherd, Mich.) also finished runner-up in the 3,000 meter distance race as she completed the event in 10:35.74.

The Cardinals will be back in action on the road next Friday (Feb. 8) for the 'Big Meet' at Grand Valley State University.
