SVSU Earns Multiple Provisional Marks at 'The Cardinal'

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track and field teams hosted "The Cardinal" tonight (Jan. 25). The meet was unscored and featured teams from Saginaw Valley, Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Alma College, Central Michigan University and Ferris State University.

Men

On the men's side, D'Omar Boyden (Portmore, Jamaica) and Deshawn Jones (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / South Lake HS) finished one-two in the 60 hurdles competition finishing with times of 8.44 and 9.12, respectively. Boyden also took first place in the 200 meter dash as he crossed the line in 23.62.

Darell Myree (Franklin HS) posted a mark of 7.17 in the 60 meter dash finals to earn top honors, while Joseph Burelle (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson HS) also gained the top spot in the men's 3k race with a time of 8:48.26. 

The SVSU men's 4x400 relay team consisting of Justin Walker (Clio, Mich. / Birch Run HS), Deshawn Jones, DaJuawn Wallace (Clinton Township, Mich. / Mt. Clemens HS) and Travis Toye (Davison, Mich.) competed the race in 3:34.93.

Junior Raetron Bryant (Burton, Mich. / Atherton HS) finished in first place in the men's triple jump competition as recorded a leap of 13.17 meters.

In the shot put competition, freshman Jarius Woolfork (Westland, Mich.) and junior Jon Roosen (Grand Blanc, Mich.) tied for second place both posting throws of 14.0 meters. Frank Sanders (Detroit, Mich. / Sterling Heights HS) also finished runner-up in the long jump as he cleared a height of 6.31 meters.

Senior Eric Spitz (Holt, Mich.) earned runner-up recognition in the men's 5,000 meter run as he completed the distance race with a time of 15:13.39.

Saginaw Valley's men's distance medley relay team consisting of Travis Toye, DaJuawn Wallace, Drew Meylan (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western HS) and Joseph Burelle would place second overall coming in with a mark of 10:31.55.

Women

The Lady Cardinals distance medley relay team opened the meet with a Division II Provisional Qualifying time of 12:07.62 to take top honors. The team consisted of Emily Short (Tawas, Mich.), Ola Hendler (Lansing, Mich. / Grand Ledge HS), Taylor Stepanski (Alpena, Mich.) and Lauren Hill (Flat Rock, Mich.).

In the 60 meter dash, Kimberly Balls (Bridgeport, Mich. ) and Elizabeth Sampson (Willis, Mich. / Lincoln HS) took the top two positions in the race with times of 8.10 and 8.28, respectively.

Saginaw Valley also took the first and second place finishes in the 5,000 meter run as Stephanie McMall (Auburn, Mich. / Bay City Western HS) and Victoria Peet (Lapeer, Mich. / Lapeer West HS) led the way with marks of 18:46.42 and 18:51.71.

In the 4x400 meter relay competition, the Lady Cardinals earned the top prize by crossing the line in 4:21.40. The relay squad consisted of Shavonne Roberson (Ypsilanti, Mich.), Kimberly Balls, Yanisha Edwards (Flint, Mich. / Northwestern HS) and Paige Stepanski (Alpena, Mich.). Yanisha Edwards also finished second in the 200 meter dash crossing the line in 28.70.

Sophomore high jumper and SVSU Volleyball player Makenzie Frodle (Fraser, Mich.) took the top prize as she cleared the bar at NCAA Division II Provisional Qualifying height of 1.67 meters, while also finishing runner-up in the long jump competition at 4.75 meters. Sidney Bischer (Avoca, Mich. / Yale HS) gained top honors in the long jump with a distance of 5.16 meters.

Saginaw native Emerald Joiner (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill HS) posted a Provisional Qualifying mark of 16.03 meters in the weight throw which landed her in second place.

Senior Lauren Hill (Flat Rock, Mich.) placed second in the 3,000 meter run in 10:05.95 which notched a provisional qualifying mark and second place. Shavonne Roberson (Ypsilanti, Mich.) also recorded a second place finish in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:01.12 to gain top honors.

The Cardinals will be back in action again at home next Friday (Feb. 1) for a duel with Grand Valley State University. Field events start at 4PM with running events beginning at 5PM.
