Cardinals Finish Sixth In GLIAC Indoor Championships

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's indoor track & field team competed in the 2011 GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday (2/25) and Saturday (2/26).  The Cardinals played host to this year's championships and put-up some good showings in the meet.

 On the men's side, sophomore Tyler Grob (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) took first place in the heptathlon shot put with a distance of 12.79 meters and third in the 60-meter dash with a final time of 7.30. Senior Aaron Wilkins (Schoolcraft, Mich./Schoolcraft HS) had a third place finish in the heptathlon long jump with a distance of 6.09 meters.  Grob finished first overall in the heptathlon, winning the shot put with a 12.79m throw, the 1,000-meter run with a final time of 2:44.43 and the pole vault with a final jump of 4.55 meters. Wilkins finished fourth overall in the heptathlon, taking third in the long jump with a final jump of 6.09 meters and second in the pole vault with a final jump of 4.35 meters. Senior Cortland Seaver (Freeland, Mich./Freeland HS) took sixth place in the 5,000 meter run with a final time of 15:01.14.

Sophomore David Ray (Lansing, Mich.) claimed a first-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a final time of 8.26 while senior Derek Stone (Metamora, Mich./Lapeer East HS) finished first in the mile run with a time of 4:14.42. Freshman Frank Sanders placed third in the high jump with a height of 1.96 meters

The men's team placed sixth overall for the GLIAC Indoor Championships and finished with 47.50 points. The GLIAC Championships conclude regular season competition for the Cardinals.  SVSU athletes who have qualified for nationals will travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico to compete in the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships.  The meet is set to take place on March 11-12.
