Cardinals Compete in the Butler University Hosted Stan Lyons Invitational

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's and women's track and field teams competed Saturday (Apr. 24) in the Stan Lyons Invitational, hosted by Butler University.

On the men's side, freshman Calvin Sullins (Adrian, Mich./Adrian HS) had a big day placing first in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.45, as well as earning second in the triple jump with a distance of 13.52meters.  There were some big personal bests in the throws as well, as sophomore Brian Bott (Buckley, Mich./Kingsley HS) earned a second place finish in the hammer throw with a distance of 53.29meters, improving his best throw by almost 20 feet.  Teammate Kane Dietzel (Twining, Mich./Whittemore-Prescott HS) would also throw a personal best in the discus with a distance of 43.55meters, placing him second and improving his best by almost 10 feet.  Senior Luke Dinnan (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) had a top finish in the throws as well, tossing the javelin a distance of 45.00meters placing him third.  Also earning a third place finish was senior Tony Filipek (Caro, Mich./Kingston HS) who crossed the line at 1:50.58 in the 800-meter run. Finally for the men, sophomore Jon Wetters (Essexville, Mich./Garber HS) placed second in the steeplechase clocking in at 9:39.76.

On the women's side, the 4x100-meter relay team that consisted of sophomores Sarah Kawiecki (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS), Elizabeth Willford (Gladwin, Mich./Gladwin HS), Kelsey Bartoloni (Southgate, Mich./Southgate HS), and junior Tasha Balls (Bridgeport, Mich./Buena Vista HS) finished second timing in at 49.58.  Willford would also place second in the pole vault with a height of 3.50meters and Kawiecki also placed third in the 400-meter hurdles clocking in at 63.54.  Placing third behind Willford in the pole vault was junior Stacey Westphal (Corunna, Mich./Corunna HS) with a height of 3.35meters.  Earning top finishes in the throws were redshirt freshman JoAnne Carter (Goodrich, Mich./Goodrich HS) and freshman Amelia Legault-Stranaly (Cheboygan, Mich./Cheboygan HS), Carter in the hammer throw with a distance of 43.71meters and Legault-Stranaly in the javelin with a toss of 33.31meters, good enough for third and second respectively.  Placing third in the triple jump and the high jump were teammates Kayleen Driscoll (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock HS) and Sarah Jones (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon HS), Driscoll in the triple jump with a distance of 10.21meters and Jones in the high jump with a height of 1.53meters.

The Cardinals will be back in action again May 5th, 6th, and 7th as they travel to Big Rapids, Michigan to compete in the Outdoor Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference Championships.
