Cardinals Host the SVSU Indoor Classic

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men’s and women’s track and field teams hosted and competed in the SVSU Indoor Classic, Friday (Jan. 29).

Both teams competed very well compiling a total of ten first place finishes. Running a Division II provisional qualifying time in the mile was senior Derek Stone (Metamora, Mich./Lapeer East HS) who completed the race in a time of 4:12.67, earning the Cardinals a first place finish. Also earning a first place finish for the Cardinals was freshman Calvin Sullins (Adrian, Mich./Adrian HS) where, in the high jump, he leaped a height of 1.93 meters. Sophomores Elliott Wilson (Marion, Mich./Marion HS) and Brian Bott (Buckley, Mich./Kingsley HS) both took first place in their respective events, Wilson in the pole vault (4.20 meters) and Bott in the weight throw (15.96 meters). Placing first in the 60-meter dash and the 60-meter hurdles were junior Scott Chevalier (Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter HS) and John Hanna (Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer East HS) timing in at 6.98 and 8.61, respectively. Earning a two foot personal best in the shot put was redshirt freshman Kane Dietzel (Twining, Mich./Whittemore-Prescott HS) who tossed the shot a distance of 14.86 meters, good enough for a second place finish. Rounding out the meet was the men’s 4x400-meter relay team that consisted of freshmen Tyler Grob (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) and Calvin Sullins, sophomore Josh Arnold (Clio, Mich./Clio HS), and junior transfer Marion Body (Sterling Heights, Mich./Sterling Heights HS) who timed in at 3:29.03.

Earning a first place in the women’s pole vault was sophomore transfer Elizabeth Willford (Gladwin, Mich./Gladwin HS) clearing a height of 3.30 meters. Sophomore Megan Pittoors (Macomb, Mich./Dakota HS) also earned a first place finish for the lady Cardinals in the 5,000-meter run finishing with a final time of 19:23.19. In the open 400-meter run freshman Ashley Lang (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) earned a first place finish timing in at 1:03.79. Taking second place in the mile and the 200-meter dash were sophomores Ashley Meyer (Shepherd, Mich./Shepherd HS) and Angela Brooks (Ortonville, Mich./Brandon HS) finishing with final times of 5:19.73 and 27.98, respectively. Also earning a second place finish was junior transfer Tiffany Norton (Flint, Mich./Carman-Ainsworth HS) who high jumped a height of 1.61 meters. Ending the meet for the lady Cardinals was the 4x400-meter relay team that consisted of sophomores Angela Brooks, Ashley Meyer, and Alycia Wright (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North HS), and junior transfer Alanah Pietryga (West Branch, Mich./Ogemaw Heights HS) who timed in at 4:13.07, placing them first overall.

The Cardinal track and field teams will be back in action again Friday (Feb. 5) as they travel to the University of Findlay to compete in the NCAA Division II Team Challenge.
