Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer program had six players named to All-GLIAC teams Thursday afternoon. Jonny Monney, Jayden Cameron, and Anthony Waller were all named first team All-GLIAC while Mzo Mthembu and Nick Kay were named second team All-GLIAC with Oleksiy Kharko earning honorable mention.
Monney is a senior forward in his third season with his second first team All-GLIAC award after being named the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2022. This year, Monney has seven goals and an assist for second most points on the team with 15. He's taken 27 shots with 14 on goal for a shooting percentage of .259 and a shot on goal percentage of .519. Head coach Louis Barrow had this to say about Monney,
"Jonny has led our line so well for the last three years. His athleticism coupled with his physicality makes him a defender's nightmare, and not to mention has a great left foot. He is a proven goal scorer in this league and been an integral part of our success."
Cameron was named first team All-GLIAC at-large is in his fourth season as a redshirt-senior forward. His career high in points leads the team with 17 with a career high seven goals and three assists while leading the team in shots with 38 and 25 on goal. Cameron enters the GLIAC semifinals with a shooting percentage of .184 and a shot on goal percentage of .658. Barrow said,
"Jayden is a brilliant football player. His ability to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and beat players and make game winning plays is unmatched. He has an excellent eye for goal and has been a huge part of the best offence in the league."
Waller earned first team All-GLIAC midfielder as a senior in his fourth season with the Cardinals. His four assists on the year tie a career high. Waller has played in 14 games and started 10 while tallying one shot on goal in two attempts. Barrow had this to say,
"Anthony is the heartbeat of our team. He covers more ground than anyone in the conference and takes pride in doing the gritty things. His ball regains and pressing moments are essential to the way we play."
Mthembu enters his second year with the program as a senior forward and was named second team All-GLIAC forward. Mthembu is third on the team in points with 12 with his six goals, setting a career high in goals. He totaled 12 shots for a shooting percentage of .500 with eight on goal for a shot on goal percentage of .667. Barrow said,
"Mzo has come up trumps in some big moments for us this season when he has been healthy. Scoring some huge goals. His ability to bring players into the game with his technical ability under pressure is what sets him apart. He is a brilliant target man with a lot of special ability."
Kay was named second team All-GLIAC goalkeeper in his junior year and third season with SVSU. He started and played in all 16 games for the Cardinals setting a career high in games played, games started, minutes played with 1440:00, wins with 11, and tying a career high six shutouts. Barrow had this to say about Kay,
"Nick has been incredible this year and has led the conference in goals against. His ability to take the pressure out of the game by collecting aerial balls and managing the game has been excellent. His ball striking and shot stopping has also proved to be of game winning standards."
Kharko earned All-GLIAC honorable mention in his first year with the program. The freshman midfielder totaled one assist with 13 shots and three on goal. He started in 15 of his 16 games played this season. Barrow said,
"Oleksiy has been special for us in midfield, considering he is a freshman he has played almost every minute this season, and at times been the best player on the field. His ability to remain calm and composed under a lot of pressure has allowed us to retain possession and spring attacks at times we otherwise couldn't have."
SVSU tied Roosevelt for most players named to the All-GLIAC teams with six. The Cardinals prepare for the GLIAC semifinals on Friday where they take on Purdue Northwest at 8:00 PM EST in Arlington Heights, Ill. Saginaw Valley spilt the season series against the Pride and look to knock the defending GLIAC champions out of the tournament.
