ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer program finished the 2024 regular season at Roosevelt Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals (11-5-0, 8-4-0 GLIAC) fell 1-0 to the Lakers (10-4-2, 8-4-0 GLIAC) and have split the regular season conference championship with RU. Roosevelt holds the tiebreaker against SVSU so Saginaw Valley will be the second seed in the GLIAC tournament and have a bye to the semifinal round.
The Cardinals outshot the Lakers 11-4 and had three shots on goal to Roosevelt's one. However, the Lakers scored in the 17th minute with a header by Oskar Schuster off a cross from Nick Killian. Evan Baker led with three shot attempts as Jonny Monney and Ryan Bovee both had two. Monney had on shot on goal out of the three as the other two shots on goal came from Jayden Cameron and Alex Demorow.
Nick Kay played all 90 minutes in goal for SVSU and finished without a save for the first time all season. SVSU's defense continued to hold their opponents to three shots on goal or less for the seventh time out of the last eight matches. Sunday's loss snaps a seven-game win streak that propelled SVSU from below .500 to the top of the GLIAC.
Up Next: Saginaw Valley men's soccer has a bye through the Quarterfinals that will take place on Sunday, November 10. The Cardinals will play the winner of St. Cloud State and Purdue Northwest on Friday, November 15. The host of the Semifinals and Finals is still to be determined.
