UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer program hosted Wisconsin-Parkside for Senior Day Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals (10-4-0, 7-3-0 GLIAC) extended their win streak to six with a 2-0 victory over the Rangers (6-5-3, 4-4-2 GLIAC). SVSU honored 13 seniors before the match including Felix Tom, Alberto Herranz, Jordan Murray, Jayden Cameron, Elliot Nottoli, Fransisco Capellan, Sheikh Manneh, Jonny Monney, Mzo Mthembu, Anthony Waller, Anta Berkeley, Alex Demorow, and Adrian Rakipi.
Saginaw Valley was outshot 19-11 and 5-3 in shots on goal but capitalized on the opportunities they got. A scoreless first half showcased 11 shots for Parkside with half of them blocked by the defense. Two made it on goal with SVSU goalkeeper Nick Kay saving one by tipping it with his hand off the crossbar and out of play. Kay earned his 10th win and fifth shutout of the year.
The deadlock was broken in the 65th minute when Cameron and Monney teamed up in the middle of the field. Monney headed the ball to Cameron who headed it back for the breakaway for Monney. He had a couple of steps on the defender and used the advantage to deliver an explosive left foot shot to the top left corner of the goal for his first of two in the game. Monney doubled the led in the 81st minute when Ryan Bovee sprung Monney on a long pass through the middle of the field. On the run, he placed a shot with less pace than the first just past the keeper in the bottom right side of the goal.
In the final 10 minutes, SVSU possessed the ball in the attacking corners trying to not allow any chances for the Rangers. After some pressure in the defensive zone, Kay was able to fall on the ball and allow the time to tick off for the win.
Up Next: Saginaw Valley men's soccer heads to Davenport on Wednesday, October 30 for a 7:00 PM EST match in Caledonia, Michigan. Afterwards, the Cardinals will finish the regular season at Roosevelt on Sunday, November 3 at 1:00 PM EST.
