Cameron’s Brace Lifts Cardinals to Five-Game Win Streak

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer program hosted Purdue Northwest Friday afternoon for their Kick Cancer game. The Cardinals (9-4-0, 6-3-0 GLIAC) defeated the Pride (5-6-2, 2-5-2 GLIAC) using three goals in the final 25 minutes to win 3-1. The victory extends SVSU's win streak to five and snaps a four-game losing streak against PNW.

Saginaw Valley led in shots 10-8 and shots on goal 6-2. Purdue Northwest goalkeeper Rozman Tomas tallied one save as two of the shots on goal were saved by two of the PNW field players. Nick Kay saved one of the two shots he faced in the win. It was a chippy match with 32 combined fouls, 13 yellow cards, and one red card against PNW late in the second half.

The Pride took the lead in the second half in the 58th minute as Jack Walsh chipped the loose ball over a sliding Kay for the 1-0 lead. Less than 10 minutes later in the 67th minute, Jayden Cameron scored his first of two goals of the match to tie it at 1-1. Oleksiy Kharko led a pass for Evan Baker who found Cameron for the open shot who beat the keeper for his team leading sixth goal of the year.

In the 77th minute Martin Murillo received his second yellow card and was shown the red card. The Cardinals capitalized on the man advantage as a cross into the box from Abe Freye went just over the hands of the keeper Tomas and Elliot Nottoli headed the cross into the net to take the 2-1 lead. Minutes later, Cameron scored his second to double the lead after Kay booted the ball down the middle of the field and Cameron corralled it on the run. After a couple of strides, Cameron lobbed a shot over the keeper and into the top right corner for his seventh of the year.
