MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer program had an immediate rematch against Northern Michigan Friday afternoon. The Cardinals (7-4-0, 4-3-0 GLIAC) defeated the Wildcats (4-6-2, 1-6-1 GLIAC) with a final score of 1-0 after winning 2-1 in their last match on Sunday.
The Cardinals broke open the scoring in the 21st minute as Jonny Monney scored his fifth of the year to tie Mzo Mthembu for the team lead. A Northern Michigan clearing attempt was intercepted by Felix Tom who launched a pass for Monney. On the run, Monney got past the Wildcat defense on the right side of the box and beat the goalkeeper in the lower left corner of the goal.
SVSU led in shots 14-9 and shots on goal 4-1 as Ryan Bovee led with three shots and one on goal. Monney was joined by Oleksiy Kharko and Matty Telfer with two shot attempts, Monney the only recording a shot on goal. Nick Kay recorded his fourth shutout of the season and second in the last three games going back to the beginning of the winning streak when Saginaw Valley shutout St. Cloud State 3-0. The Cardinal defense held the Wildcats under their GLIAC-leading shot attempts per game and shots on goal per game for the second contest in a row. NMU did have eight of their nine corners in the second half of the match and led in that category 9-3, but they were unable to generate many chances off the set pieces.
The rematch was less physical than the previous one at Saginaw Valley. A total of 24 fouls was only one less than the previous match of 25, however, Friday's match only had one yellow card each and no red cards compared to six yellow cards and two reds on Sunday.
