UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer program took home two wins this weekend and on Monday took home two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week awards.
SVSU redshirt senior, Jayden Cameron, was named Offensive Player of the Week after scoring two goals in two matches. Cameron netted the final in a 3-0 win against No. 13 St. Cloud State on Friday before tallying the game-winning-goal on Sunday in a 2-1 win against Northern Michigan. The latter came with only 8:12 remaining on the clock. He also assisted a goal against the Huskies to total five points this weekend. The Brampton, Ontario native recorded seven shots and four shots on goal as well.
Cardinal fifth year, Francisco Capellan, was named Defensive Player of the Week after making his Saginaw Valley debut. The transfer from Jacksonville University backed a defensive squad that shut out the No. 13 team in the nation allowing only five shots and one on goal, that shot being off a penalty kick. The Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native helped the defense hold the GLIAC leading shot takers in Northern Michigan to seven shots and two on goal. The Wildcats were averaging 15.5 shots per game and just under six shots on goal per game.
Cameron and Capellan earn their first GLIAC Player of the Week awards as the program now has four this season. This is the first Offensive Player of the Week award for the Cardinals and the third Defensive Player of the Week.
With the two wins, men's soccer moves to 6-4-0 overall and 3-3-0 in the GLIAC to tie Roosevelt in record and are tied with the Lakers and Davenport in conference points. The Cardinals head back on the road this weekend as they have a rematch against Northern Michigan up in Marquette on Friday before heading to St. Cloud, Minnesota on Sunday to face the Huskies.
