Cardinals Win Physical Match Against Northern Michigan

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer program wrapped up the weekend hosting Northern Michigan Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals (6-4-0, 3-3-0 GLIAC) defeated the Wildcats (4-5-2, 1-5-1 GLIAC) 2-1 in a match that had 25 combined fouls, six yellow cards, and a red card for each team.

SVSU led in shots 15-7 and shots on goal 8-2 along with corner kicks 9-4. Saginaw Valley controlled the play for much of the early game and took the lead as Felix Tom headed the cross from a corner kick from Anthony Waller. Tom's header in the 12th minute put the Cardinals up 1-0. Northern Michigan tied the match in the 32nd minute as a cross went off the hands of the SVSU goalkeeper Nick Kay and the second chance was pure from James Carr.

After the halftime break, the physicality rose as the clouds and rain drops rolled in. Elliot Nottoli was given a red card in the 66th minute putting the Cardinals down a man for the remaining 24 minutes. The Wildcats tried to use the advantage as a momentum shift but couldn't break the tie. In the 81st minute, Luca Rub received his second yellow card for Northern Michigan and was given a red card as well, evening the playing field.

It didn't take long for SVSU to capitalize as 56 seconds later Jayden Cameron had a give-and-go pass that led to a cross into the box. Anthonius Berkeley got a touch on the ball after it was deflected by an NMU defender and the touch was perfect for Cameron to deliver the go-ahead strike and his fourth goal of the season.

Riding the highs, the Cardinals killed off the remaining eight minutes to win back-to-back matches at home this weekend.
