Cardinals Fall to Roosevelt in Close Match

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer program hosted Roosevelt Friday afternoon. The Cardinals (4-2-0, 1-1-0 GLIAC) fell 2-1 to the Lakers (3-0-2, 1-0-0 GLIAC) in a roller coaster of a match.

Roosevelt led in shots 10-9 but Saginaw Valley had the advantage in shots on goal 6-5. The teams racked up 25 fouls with 15 to the Cardinals. After falling behind 2-0, the intensity from SVSU increased.

The Lakers took advantage of early chances scoring in the 24th and 37th minutes as Nick Killian assisted both goals. The Cardinals had chances off set pieces early with free kicks just outside the box, but nothing was getting past the Lakers goalkeeper. Jayden Cameron had a penalty kick opportunity in the second half that was saved and Mzo Mthembu gathered the rebound and had his shot saved as well.

Cameron had another chance minutes later with a free kick outside the box and on the left side of the field. He delivered a strike to the top right portion of the goal in the 55th minute to bring Saginaw Valley within one.

Cards started to fly as the clock ticked down. Roosevelt received two yellow cards and Saginaw Valley received a yellow and a red in the final third of the match. SVSU Keeper Nick Kay stopped three of the five shots he faced, and the Cardinal offense couldn't find one more in the back of the net for the tie.

Up Next: Saginaw Valley men's soccer heads to Parkside (2-0-2, 0-0-1 GLIAC) on Friday, October 4. The match kicks off at 3:30 PM EST from Wood Road Soccer Field in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
