UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer program opened conference play at home against Davenport Wednesday afternoon. The Cardinals (4-1-0, 1-0-0 GLIAC) defeated the Panthers (3-3-1, 0-1-0) 3-0 as Jonny Monney scored twice early on and Nick Kay earned his second clean sheet of the season.
It was a dominating win for the No. 13 Cardinals as they led in shots 18-10 and shots on goal 8-2. They also led in corner kicks 10-3. SVSU did not score off a set piece but generated chances off the opportunities.
Monney opened the scoring in the 11th minute as Elliot Nottoli lobbed a pass deep for Matty Telfer. Telfer used one touch to open up a pass to the middle of the box for Monney who delivered a strike to the middle of the net. Monney doubled the lead less than eight minutes later with a nearly identical play. Anthony Waller ran down a loose ball near the keeper and centered from the left side for Monney for another strike into the open net in the 19th minute.
Out of the halftime break, Saginaw Valley had a couple more chances as Telfer had his touch off a cross go high and the Cardinals had two shots go off the crossbar. In the 89th minute, the offensive pressure persisted as Mzo Mthembu scored his team leading fifth goal of the season. Adrian Rakipi headed a ball forward and Jayden Cameron tapped a pass over a defender for Mthembu who ran down the right side of the box. His shot hit the right post, bounced off the left post, and then made its way into the net for the 3-0 lead.
