CALEDONIA, Mich. – Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer had a week off and headed to Davenport Sunday afternoon for a GLIAC matchup. The Panthers came out on top 2-0 as the game got physical for SVSU totaling seven yellow cards.
Connor Beach was tested in net early for the Cardinals as he faced 14 shots in the first half, saving six of the eight on goal. Davenport scored the first goal in the 21st minute and doubled the lead 12 minutes later in the 33rd minute.
Saginaw Valley took one shot and put it on goal in the first half. In the second, they outshot Davenport 5-3 and had two more shots on goal. Mzo Mthembu led the offense with two shots, one on goal. Abe Freye and Anthony Waller both put their lone shot on goal. Donna Kheswa and Jason Squeo followed it up with a shot each.
The Panthers had one yellow card compared to the six for the Cardinals, but the game was physical both ways. Davenport led with 18 fouls compared to Saginaw Valley's 15.
Men's soccer falls to 3-5-3 overall and 1-3-2 in GLIAC play. They head home after the one game road trip to host Northern Michigan on Friday. Kickoff set for the GLIAC match at 12:00 PM.
