UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Another physical match at Robert C. Braddock Field as Saginaw Valley State University and Purdue Northwest men's soccer combined for 32 fouls, six yellow cards, and a red card. After the dust settled, the Pride found themselves on top 2-0.
Purdue Northwest peppered the Cardinal goaltender, Connor Beach, in net in the first half. 12 shot attempts with six of them finding their mark. However, one found the back of the net in the 23rd minute of the match. Jacob Battista got the rebound off a Beach save and found himself alone on the left side of the box and his follow up shot went lower left into the goal.
Saginaw Valley had their chances too coming from Donna Kheswa, Luke Allen, Shiekh Manneh, and Mzo Mthembu. All four tallied a shot on goal with Kheswa having two of the seven shot attempts for SVSU. The Cardinals had a couple of near misses as well coming from Kheswa and Jonathan Monney. Four of their seven shots came in the first half with the other three in the final 45 minutes.
Early in the second half, PNW doubled their advantage as Hugo Lorenzo broke free in mid field and got in alone to chip one by in the 50th minute. Afterwards, the physicality grew. Four of the six yellow cards and the red card took place after the second goal of the game. Saginaw Valley was responsible for four yellows and the red. Playing down a man for the final 15 minutes, SVSU kept the pressure and PNW only had a two-shot advantage 5-3.
The Cardinals have a week off as they'll head to Davenport on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 2:00 P.M. EDT.
