UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team played host to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers Friday afternoon. It was a tough battle with the Rangers on top of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) standings and the Cardinals in second. Parkside stays on top after a 3-1 win over Saginaw Valley.
The Rangers broke open the scoring early with a shot from Edgar Heredia Victoria outside of the box in the 5th minute. It didn't take long for them to double the lead as Christoper Estrada received a pass from Kaffie Kurz after a shot block. Estrada got a shot off inside the box and scored lower left making it 2-0 Parkside in the 19th minute.
UWP had eight shots and four corner kicks in the first half to fuel their offensive pressure. They extended their lead late in the first half as a cross got through the box from the left side. The ball found its way past a crowd of bodies and onto the right foot of Bryan Torres with an empty net in front of him. Torres found the back of the net in the 42nd minute to make it 3-0.
The second half was a turn around for the Cardinals. Parkside kept up their shots having another eight in the half, but Jack Simms stopped all five on target in the final 45 minutes. SVSU had two shots in the half with both finding the target and had five corner kicks as they put on the pressure late into the match.
In the 68th minute, Mzo Mthembu got a pass from Jonathan Monney just outside the box. Mthembu made a move around one defender to open up space before chipping a shot top left and past the Ranger goalkeeper. It was Mthembu's first goal of the season as the Cardinals continued a late push. A few more offensive chances came up empty for SVSU who ended up falling 3-1.
Saginaw Valley men's soccer is now 3-3-3 and 1-1-2 in the conference. The team will be back in action at home as they host Purdue Northwest for a GLIAC match on Sunday starting at 1:00 P.M. at Robert C. Braddock Field.
