UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team restarted Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play against Davenport University on Sunday after a non-conference game Friday. Both teams battled and got some late chances but came up empty with the match drawing 0-0.
Saginaw Valley outshot Davenport 13-12, however, the Panthers put four on target compared to the Cardinals three. Jack Simms stopped all four shots he faced tallying his third shutout of the season. Abe Freye led the team in shots with three while Shiekh Manneh, Chidie Nnolim, and Evan Baker all had one on goal.
Davenport edged out Saginaw Valley in the first half stats outshooting the Cardinals 6-4 and having two fouls while SVSU committed five. Simms made three of his four saves in the first half. Freye got two of his three shots in the same sequence as he had an opportunity in tight that hit the right post and he followed up with a rebound shot just wide of the goal.
In the second half, the intensity of play and offensive chances picked up. Saginaw Valley tallied nine shots and had multiple close chances. Davenport goaltender Bobby Curran had to make a few tough saves to keep the Panthers in the match. Aiding the nine shots was the number of corner kicks for SVSU. Five of their six corners came in the second half while Davenport got sloppy committing 10 of their 12 fouls. Saginaw Valley had a clean final 45 minutes only committing three fouls down the stretch.
Cardinal men's soccer is now 3-2-3 overall with a GLIAC record of 1-0-2. They'll welcome Wisconsin-Parkside to Robert C. Braddock field on Friday. Kickoff of that match is set for 1:00 PM.
