Saginaw Valley Defeats Cedarville in Double Overtime, 1-0

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team finished out their weekend at home today (9/6) with a 1-0 double overtime win over Cedarville, continuing their impressive start to the 2014 season.

Saginaw Valley showed advantage in shots for the first half, out-shooting the Yellow Jackets by a margin of 9-4.  With excellent defense shown by both teams however, the squads headed into halftime scoreless.  The second half played out in similar fashion, with the Cardinals leading in shots 7-2, however no goals being scored on either side.

The first overtime saw very few scoring opportunities for either team.  It was in the 107th minute of the second overtime that freshman Matthew Lang was able to drive the ball in the goal with an assist from Craig Neal to give the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage and the win over Cedarville.

The Saginaw Valley defense allowed just eight shots as freshman goalkeeper Alexandre Bouillennec was able to block the two shots that were sent on goal, completing his second shutout of the season for his second-career victory.

"I'm extremely proud of how the boys battled through a tough weekend and played strong on both sides of the ball," said SVSU Head Coach Cale Wassermann. "Two shut out wins against two very good opponents and contributions all over the field from everybody made the difference...Now we look forward to our next challenge and continuing with this momentum going forward."

The victory puts the Cardinals at 2-0-0 on the early season while the Yellow Jackets fall to 1-1-0.  Saginaw Valley continues the season with a home match and GLIAC opener on Friday (9/12) against their rival Northwood University.  Match time is set for 3:30 pm at SVSU's Braddock Field.
