Harmeson and Choi Named to All-GLIAC Teams

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's golf program had two student-athletes named to the All-GLIAC Teams, as announced by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference office Thursday morning. Junior Shea Harmeson was named First Team All-GLIAC, while senior Jiseung Choi earned Honorable Mention All-GLIAC honors. Harmeson and Choi led the Cardinals to their first NCAA appearance since 2017 and their highest finish in the Regional Tournament since 2014.

Harmeson highlighted the 2024–25 season as just the second SVSU men's golfer to win the GLIAC Championships as an individual. He shot a 70 (-2) and a season-low 66 (-6) to capture the title. The Traverse City, Michigan native finished as the No. 16 ranked golfer in the region — the highest individual ranking for SVSU. He posted a scoring average of 72.4 over 30 rounds and compiled a record of 635-129-28, with two wins and three top-three finishes. His other victory came at the Battle of Brunswick, where he shot rounds of 70 (-2), 75 (+3), and 72 (E). Harmeson also finished second at the Findlay Spring Invite, carding another 66 in the opening round. Over the season, he shot under par 11 times, including all three rounds of the GLIAC Championships, a 70 (-2) in the finals, and a 70 (-1) at the NCAA DII Midwest Regional.

"Shea is an incredibly talented athlete with an unwavering dedication to his game," said head coach Mike Masten. "His relentless work ethic has paid off, as his performance this season proved he's among the top golfers in the GLIAC. We could always count on him to post a low number and lead by example. We're excited to see what he'll accomplish next year — the best is yet to come."

Choi wrapped up his season with three top-three finishes and ranked No. 39 in the region. The Houghton, Michigan, native averaged 73.7 over 30 rounds and posted a record of 535-231-26. He earned third-place finishes at the Al Watrous Invite, the Motor City Shakedown in the fall, and the Battle at Brunswick to open the spring. He shot under par eight times, including a season-low 67 (-4) at the NCAA DII Midwest Regional. Choi led the Cardinals at the St. Joseph Country Club with rounds of 73 (+2), 67 (-4), and 76 (+5) to finish 19th overall.

Masten said this about Choi:

"KJ is a rare kind of student-athlete — the complete package every coach hopes for. He's been unwavering in his commitment to his team and his university, and I could always count on him for anything and everything. Over the past two seasons, he worked tirelessly to elevate his game and become a key contributor. In my 13 years of coaching, I've never coached a harder-working athlete. KJ is the model captain — his experience, knowledge, selflessness, and deep love for SVSU will be nearly impossible to replace. There's no doubt he'll go on to do great things in this world."
