UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team ended the 2024-25 season with an 84-65 defeat to Ferris State on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals (10-18, 6-14 GLIAC) struggled from three-point range in the loss to the Bulldogs (24-7, 14-6 GLIAC), going 6-of-27 from deep.
Meijer Player of the Game Toodles Seal led SVSU in scoring (18 points), Rebounds (8), and steals (4) in the losing effort. Nate Washburn added 10 points off the bench for his second double-digit scoring output of the season. Niko Newsome tallied nine points as did Triston Nichols. Nichols also pulled down six boards for the second-highest total on the team. Richmond Mawutor collected five rebounds and Freddie McIntosh contributed four assists.
The Cardinals started cold in the first 4:25 of play, missing their first seven shots, five from three-point range, while Ferris State built a 13-point lead.
Seal hit a jumper from inside the paint for Saginaw Valley State's first points. The bucket also ignited an 8-0 run for SVSU that trimmed the margin to five points with just under 13 minutes in the opening half.
At the 11:03 mark of the period, the Bulldogs began a 12-0 run to move ahead by 17, and the Cardinals could only work the advantage down to 39-26 as the teams entered the locker room at the break.
The Ferris State lead grew in the first 10 minutes of the second, getting as high as 32 points with a 69-37 difference on the scoreboard with 11:21 left to play.
Seal led the charge of chipping away at the lead as he tallied 14 of his total points in the second half and six of his eight rebounds in the same period. Washburn followed suit with seven of his 10 in the second frame, but it was only good enough to whittle away the lead to 13 points when the final buzzer sounded.
SEASON WRAP-UP: The Cardinal men's basketball team completed the season with 10 wins and missed the GLIAC Tournament due to a tiebreaker with conference newcomer Roosevelt.
