Cardinals Fall to Lakers

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team fell 88-66 to Lake Superior State on Thursday night.

Meijer Player of the Game Toodles Seal led the Cardinals (10-17, 6-13 GLIAC) with 25 points. It is the sixth straight game that Seal has tallied 20 or more points with two of those outings reaching 30-plus points. Bryson Huckeby was one point short of matching his career-high of 18 points while also pulling down nine rebounds to lead SVSU in that category. Richmond Mawutor contributed six rebounds and a team-high two assists.

The Lakers (24-5, 15-4 GLIAC) made back-to-back three-pointers and never trailed in the contest. LSSU built a 13-point lead in the opening 10 minutes of play, 19-6, but SVSU battled back to trim the deficit to single digits four times over the next six minutes before a three-point jumper from the Lakers put the lead into double-digits for good at the 5:05 mark of the first half.

Seal made a shot from deep to open the second half and bring the Cardinals within 10 points of Lake State, but a 10-0 run for the Lakers extended the advantage to 20 points, 56-36, with 17:47 left in regulation. Maurice Anderson made a layup at 16:32 that sparked an 8-0 run to close the gap at 12 points, 58-46, but Saginaw Valley State could get no closer.

The Cardinals currently sit in the final GLIAC tournament spot in the league standings in eighth. SVSU is tied with Roosevelt with one game remaining in the regular season against Ferris State this Saturday, March 1 at 3:00 p.m. (ET).
