CHICAGO – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team suffered a 100-93 heartbreaking defeat in overtime to Roosevelt in Chicago, Illinois on Saturday evening. The Cardinals (9-15, 5-11 GLIAC) held a six-point lead in the final 10 minutes of regulation but couldn't hold onto the advantage before the final buzzer sounded.
Five Saginaw Valley State players scored double-digit points. Toodles Seal reached 30 points for the second time this season to lead SVSU in that category. Seal added 11 rebounds to his stat line to complete just his third double-double of the season. Maurice Anderson finished with 16 points, four rebounds, and two steals, while Triston Nichols scored 14 points off the bench. Bryson Huckeby tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double as a Cardinal. Freddie McIntosh was the final SVSU player to break the 10-point barrier with 11 points on the afternoon.
Roosevelt began the game with a 12-2 run in the opening four minutes of play. Maurice Anderson made a tip-in layup that sparked a 7-0 run and cut the deficit to just three points with just under five minutes expired from the clock.
Seal hits a jumper outside the paint at 13:53 to erase the gap at 14 points each. Niko Newsome added a layup that gave SVSU its first lead of the game with just under 12 and a half minutes before the half.
The Lakers used a 7-2 run to build another advantage (28-23) with 8:03 left in the first. The Cardinals cut it down to one point on a 5-0 run, but Roosevelt moved back ahead by double-digits with a 39-29 edge in the final four minutes. SVSU scored seven of the last nine points in the half to trail 44-39 as the teams entered the locker room at the break.
Anderson made a three-point jumper to return the game to even at 50 points with 3:31 off the clock in the second half. The Lakers held a slim advantage until Nichols made a layup through contact and completed the three-point play to tie the game at 62 with 11:23 left in regulation.
Nate Washburn followed up with a layup to give the Cardinals their second lead of the contest on the next possession.
A series of free throws pushed the SVSU advantage to its peak at 74-68 with 6:16 on the clock, but Roosevelt battled back to tie the game at 77 points with a step-back jumper with 52 ticks remaining. Seal then hit a jump shot on the opposite end, but the Lakers made a layup with four seconds left to force overtime.
The Lakers hopped out to a quick five-point lead in the extra period and never trailed despite the Cardinals knotting things up twice. The final tie came off a three-point jumper by McIntosh with 2:51 left, but Roosevelt used a 6-0 run to keep the advantage and earn the win.
