HAMMOND, IND. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team pulled out a 103-100 overtime win over Purdue Northwest in the PNW Fitness and Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals (9-11, 5-7 GLIAC) outscored the Pride (4-16, 1-11 GLIAC) 16-13 in the extra period to earn a third-straight win.
Toodles Seal reached the 30-point mark for the first time as a Cardinal with a career-high 34 points and was one rebound short of a double-double on the afternoon. Freddie McIntosh matched his season high of 25 points for the third time this season. Maurice Anderson scored 13 points off the bench and Niko Newsome tallied 10 points in the winning effort. Bryson Huckeby was a rebound and bucket way from a double-double. Richmond Mawutor finished with eight points and eight rebounds as well.
Purdue Northwest hopped out to a 6-2 lead in the opening three minutes of play, but Newsome made a three, and Mawutor and McIntosh added layups to knot things up at nine points at 16:29 of the first half.
The score was tied twice before the Cardinals used a 14-0 run sparked by a Mawutor layup that lasted almost six minutes and put the score at 34-20. The Pride were able to cut the lead to nine points twice before the half, but SVSU held onto a double-digit advantage, 48-36, as the teams headed into the locker room at the half.
PNW used a 7-0 run in the opening five minutes of the second half to trim the deficit to 54-48. A 5-0 run by the Pride closed the gap to 58-55 with 12:59 left in regulation.
The score was tied at 61 with a three-point jumper by PNW just over the halfway mark of the half. Seal made a three to keep the Cardinals in the lead but a layup and jumper from the home team flipped the advantage to the Pride for the first time in the half.
The teams would trade leads a total of 30 times with 28 ties with the final tie in regulation coming with two free throws from Seal in the closing seconds that forced the overtime period.
A layup by the Pride came in the opening minute of overtime that knotted the game at 89. Seal hit a jumper through a foul and completed the and-one and the Cardinals remained on top until the final buzzer.
