UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team cruised to a 79-61 win over Roosevelt on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals (7-11, 3-7 GLIAC) made seven three-point shots and finished 47.5% from the floor for the game.
Meijer Player of the Game Richmond Mawutor recorded his second double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Toodles Seal and Triston Nichols led SVSU in scoring with 17 points. Seal tallied seven rebounds. Niko Newsome tallied 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting. Bryson Huckeby hauled in seven rebounds with three points on his stat line.
The teams traded layups in the opening minute of play before Huckeby hit a three-point jumper at 18:53 to spark a 9-0 run and the Cardinals never looked back for the remainder of regulation.
SVSU rolled through the first half, building a lead of 42-21 with 2:30 remaining in the first, and took that same margin into the locker room at the break.
Newsome led the Saginaw Valley at the break with 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor. Mawutor tallied seven of his rebounds in the opening frame. The Cardinals shot an impressive 64.3% from the floor in the opening 20 minutes and the team's bench outscored the Lakers 14-2.
The second half was much of the same as Saginaw Valley pushed the advantage to a peak of 31 points after Nichols hit a jumper on a fast break at 11:27 to put the score at 66-35.
Roosevelt cut the lead to 15, but the Cardinals' win was never in doubt. SVSU bounced back with a GLIAC victory to improve to 6-3 at home this season, 3-2 in league games.
The Saginaw Valley bench finished the game with a 33-6 advantage in points off the bench. The Cardinals also pulled down 46 rebounds to Roosevelt's 29. SVSU recorded 16 second-chance points off of 18 offensive rebounds.
