MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team fell 75-62 to Northern Michigan on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals (6-10, 2-6 GLIAC) surrendered 47 points in the final frame against the Wildcats (12-4, 6-2 GLIAC) inside Vandament Arena.
Freddie McIntosh scored 21 points to lead SVSU in that category in the losing effort. McIntosh's point total is the fifth game this season with 20+ points. Maurice Anderson totaled 11 points with three rebounds for the afternoon. Boubacar Keita scored his first points as a Cardinal with eight on 3-of-4 shooting. Bryson Huckeby recorded eight points while Richmond Mawutor led SVSU with seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
McIntosh scored the first three points of the game, and after Huckeby hit a three, McIntosh added a layup and a second three-point jumper to complete a 16-3 run that lasted the first four minutes of play.
NMU used a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to three points with six minutes remaining in the first half. Huckeby sparked a 5-0 run to end the half with the 33-28 edge.
SVSU made six three-pointers in the first half and outrebounded the Wildcats 19-14 to hold the lead at the break. McIntosh made half of the Cardinals' three-pointers to gather 14 of his 21 points during the opening 20 minutes of play. Huckeby shot 2-of-3 from deep to tally six points.
The Cardinals suffered a scoring drought that lasted for the first 6:44 of the second half, during which Northern Michigan scored 19 points to build a 47-35 lead.
Saginaw Valley trimmed the lead to nine points twice but could not get any closer before time expired.
UP NEXT: The Cardinals will finish their three-game road trip by visiting Detroit to play Wayne State on Thursday, January 23, at 7:30 p.m. (ET). They will return to O'Neill Arena next Saturday to host GLIAC newcomer Roosevelt at 3:00 p.m. (ET).
