UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team fell at home to Parkside 77-66 on Saturday afternoon.
Meijer Player of the Game Toodles Seal led the way for the Cardinals (6-8, 2-4 GLIAC) with 15 points and was two rebounds short of a double-double on the afternoon. Bryson Huckeby added 15 points with six rebounds in the losing effort.
With a three-point bucket in the opening minute, Huckeby got things going to put SVSU on top, 3-0. The Rangers (6-8, 3-3 GLIAC) made back-to-back shots to earn their first lead, 4-3, with 18:29 on the clock in the opening 20 minutes.
Freshman Niko Newsome made a layup to start his afternoon and regain the lead for Saginaw Valley State before hitting a second one on the next possession that sparked a 5-0 run and gave the Cardinals their largest lead of the game at 10-5 with 17:01 left in the first half.
Seal made an alley-oop from senior Freddie McIntosh to hold onto the five-point advantage, 14-9, with just under 12 minutes to play in the first. A 7-0 run started by a three-point jumper from Parkside resulted in a 17-16 lead with eight minutes left.
A second 7-0 run late in the first half pushed the lead to 29-22 with 2:49 on the clock and the Rangers took an eight-point edge into the locker room at the half.
The Cardinals shot 11-of-25 (44 percent) from the floor in the first half and struggled from deep, making only two of the nine attempts from beyond the arc.
Maurice Anderson made a three to start the second, but a 5-0 run by Parkside pushed the advantage to 11 points in the opening four minutes.
A layup off a turnover pushed the Rangers' lead to 51-36 with 10:28 to play. The Cardinals rallied to trim the margin to eight points in the final six minutes, but Parkside made their free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
McIntosh finished with 13 points, five rebounds, two steals, and assists. Anderson tallied 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting with one steal. Newsome finished with nine points in the afternoon.
