Cardinals End 2024 with 87-63 Win Over Kuyper

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team ended the 2024 calendar year with an 87-63 win over Kuyper College on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals (5-5) had four players hit double-digit points in the dominant win over the Cougars (6-10).

Meijer Player of the Game Elijah Mattingly tallied 11 points and 13 rebounds for his second double-double. Mattingly also had a game-high three blocks in the win. Toodles Seal finished with 22 points and six rebounds. Freddie McIntosh finished with 15 and seven rebounds. Maurice Anderson had his fourth double-digit point game, registering 11 points off the bench for SVSU. Bryson Huckeby contributed a team-high six assists along with six rebounds.

Mattingly hit the game's first bucket with a three-pointer in the opening two minutes of the game for the 3-0 lead. The Cougars tied the score twice before hopping out to a 10-9 lead with a three-point jump shot by Richard Major at 15:09. The lead was pushed to 16-9 as the Cardinals halted a 9-0 run with a layup from Nate Washburn that sparked five-straight points and trim the advantage to two points at the 12:49 mark of the first half.

Anderson made back-to-back threes to knot things up at 20 with just over 11 and a half to play. McIntosh would recapture the lead for SVSU with a shot from distance at 9:16, but a 5-0 run flipped the advantage back to the Cougars with just over seven minutes before the break.

Seal made a layup and a dunk to start a 9-0 run that moved the gap to 36-29 in favor of the Cardinals and the home team took an 11-point lead into the locker room at the half.

Saginaw Valley State pushed the lead further after building a 62-42 lead at the 12:38 mark of the second half. The gap moved to 28 points (the largest lead of the game for SVSU) with 4:09 left and the Cardinals never looked back from there.
